Together We are Everything
When I listen to the world
I hear secrets
resting in the air around us
A whisper that cannot be made out
then
silence
Cruel
painful
sorrowful silence
But I also hear hope
it announces itself with uplifting music and bright vivid colors
it shows the world that
it’s okay to be different
In fact
it is amazing
to stand out
When I look at the world
I see pain
resting like a shaggy blanket
on chocolate colored shoulders
heavy
with anger
and wet
with tears
But I also see
the light of gratitude
it guides the hungry and poor on
teaches them to uncurl their withered bodies
and stand back up
Listen to these words
I am begging you
There are differences that divide us
I would be lying if I said there wasn’t
But their are also similarities
that unite us
We need
to learn to push past the labels that put us in boxes
We need
to learn to love peoples differences instead of scolding people for them
We need
to learn to work together as one
because together
we are everything
Listen these words
I am begging you
Because the words to this poem
change
everything
